Namibia, parastatals review ICT progress

WINDHOEK – NAMIBIA’S government and its telecommunications parastatals — Telecom Namibia and PowerCom — are reviewing progress and future plans in the sector.

Both are government owned.

Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), met the boards this week in Windhoek, the capital.

“Telecom Namibia highlighted the need for critical capital investment to modernise legacy network infrastructure and strengthen service delivery, while PowerCom presented its infrastructure expansion plans, including a five-year network tower rollout aimed at improving national connectivity and supporting Namibia’s digital transformation,” she said.

Theofelus also took time to engage directly with Telecom employees, providing a platform for staff to share their concerns and grievances.

During the engagement, employees raised the ongoing theft of copper cables and called on government, through the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to explore ways to curb the problem, which they said continues to disrupt telecommunications services.

“The meeting formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure a stronger, more reliable telecommunications sector for all Namibians,” Theofelus said.
